WTN: 1989 J. L. Chave Hermitage

by Paul Winalski » Mon Dec 04, 2017 4:28 pm

A dark, brick-red color. Complex aromas of smoke and black fruits that you can get completely lost in. Luxurious flavors that follow the aromas. Tannins completely resolved, but a bit of a tart bite in the finish. This is Hermitage, and the syrah grape, at its best. If you're blessed with any bottles of this great wine, IMO there's no rush to drink them up, but no reason to lay off them, either.

Triple Curly, with an extra woo-woo and perhaps a hint of Moe lurking in the background.

Ah, Chave. Possibly, for me, the greatest wine in the world. Do you have a good stash of them?

I've still got 4 bottles (also the 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997). When are you coming to Toronto? :D

Drank my last a year or two ago, and it was also a 1989. And it was one of the greatest wines I'd ever tasted. What struck me about the wine, besides the multi-layered and beguiling bouquet, was the sweetness and harmony on the palate. Just stunning.

I have a bottle of J. L. Chave's '85 Hermitage, a couple more of the '89, and some '90. The prices skyrocketed in the 90s and Chave Hermitage went outside my financial reach.

I have 1 lone bottle of '90 remaining, gifted to me (along with a couple of other gems) by Bob Ross in a 2006 WLDG contest.
