Frog's Leap 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Just beginning to enter maturity, this is sunny-sweet but not overdone, with forward, medium-bodied currant and berry fruit, decent depth, showing just a few touches of age around the edges. Nothing astounding, but straightforward and pleasing.
Clos Saron 2013 El Dorado County Syrah, "Stone Soup." 13.2%, from vines at 2000'. Local somm was talking this producer up several weeks ago; I'd never heard of them. We went another direction at that dinner, but I came home, read up (here and elsewhere), and decided to get a mixed half-case (of this and the "Home" vineyard Pinot). Last night* this was tight as a drum, showing very little other than very dense, super high-toned cranberry and tart wild blueberry fruit, even after decanting, so I returned the rest to the bottle; tonight, there's a little more depth there, and I begin to sense some darker elements, but I think it's still clearly just way, way too young. Do the Pinots need to be ignored for 8-10+ years from vintage, too?
(*It's been a couple of weeks since delivery so I doubt this was travel shock.)
