WTN: Two 2013 Ramey Chardonnays

by David M. Bueker » Tue Dec 19, 2017 3:28 pm

2013 Ramey Chardonnay Platt Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (12/18/2017)
This is a rich, big boned expression of Ramey Chardonnay. It is relatively round in terms of palate feel, and shows a distinct spice character. It’s so spicy that it almost catches at the back of the throat. Pear and pineapple fruit mingle with the spice, and there is sufficient acidity on the back end to add some refreshment.

2013 Ramey Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros (12/19/2017)
In contrast to the Platt, this is a brighter, more focused wine. It handles it’s oak in a much more elegant way (19 months in oak, on the lees, 25% of the oak was new according to the winemaker for both Platt and Hyde), with more lemony and apple focused fruit. There is a bit of riper, more tropical fruit on the finish, but this is more about freshness, where the Platt is about richness. Interesting contrast.

Yup, David...I like DaveRamey's Chards quite a bit, particularly the Platt.
Radio-Coteau makes a Riesling that comes from Platt. World-class it is..as good as anything from the Mosel!!
I wish there were more folks out on the extreme SonomaCoast growing Riesling. They used to have some at Hirsch, but it was pulled.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm, west coast Riesling faces several obstacles, the most significant of which is soil.
