Fritz Willi Riesling Feinherb 2015 Review

by Tristan B » Thu Jan 18, 2018 1:31 pm

I was shopping in my local liquor store (LCBO is what its called here in Ontario) and I stumbled across this wine. I just glanced over it the first time. On my second visit not two days later, it was gone...all of it. I asked my contact in that store when they will get more and I was the first one in line to pick up a bottle. I brought it home and poured myself a glass.

The nose was that of peaches and apricots, fresh ripe white and orange fruits. The palate was smothered in sweet oranges, tangerines and apricots, with a slight dryness. Smooth going down, but dryish. Definitely and experience worth having. I made my way back to the store and bought two more. One to keep for myself later down the road and one as a gift for my German relatives who I know would adore this wine. The Germans do love their apricots. I would recommend this wine. It was such a pleasure to drink. Just for reference it ran me about $20.00.

Googling tells me that this wine comes from Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Trier. Does the back label give any more precise information about origin? Price ex-cellar seems to be €6,90. Canadian sellers appear to have very nice margins!

Oh they definitely have great margins. Probably making $11.00 off each bottle. We get screwed here for wine prices in Ontario. On the back it states that it is from Mosel, Germany.

Actually, given exchange rates, and the fact that importers and shippers need to be paid, it’s not such a bad price.

€7 is about $11 Canadian. Pay to get it to Canada, and pay the people who work at the LCBO, and it’s not egregious for retail to be $20.

Funny thing is that in Germany, this bottle probably costs about 2-3€, we do get heavily taxed here. When I was in Portugal during the summer months, I had the pleasure of enjoying some of the finest wines Portugal has to offer, sometimes for free and other times for very cheap. Look even at wines made in the Niagara Region, they are just as pricey (for us) as the ones that are imported.

Tim noted above that the wine sells for €7 at the cellar door.

Interesting. Maybe an exception?

I would be surprised if it did as it is sort of a Gutswein. FWG has vineyards in Graach, Bernkastel and Trittenheim in the Mittelmosel and in Falkenberg at the Saar. I would assume most of the crop comes from the Mittelmosel.
