WTN: two Mourvedres.

by Patchen Markell » Sat Jan 20, 2018 10:37 pm

Domaine Tempier 1997 Bandol Cuvée Spéciale "La Migoua." Mellow tobacco and dried cherry blended into a smooth, waxy, slightly truffly, slightly tarry substrate. This never becomes especially aromatically expressive, but it's texturally delightful, and it works just fine with a dry-aged steak with maitake mushrooms. Not a spectacular wine but an understatedly delicious one. I don't actually know the percentage of Mourvedre in this vintage but if I recall correctly this bottling can have a lot of Grenache and Cinsault in it too.

Dirty and Rowdy 2014 Chalone Mourvedre, Antle Vineyard. Savory-meaty and floral, seems delicate at first but the initial aromatic intensity is followed by a building wave of tannin that one doesn't expect, especially given the relatively light color. This is the second bottle of this we've opened and both have been excellent, but I think the tannic back end is even more prominent now, so I think we'll hold the remaining couple of bottles for a while in case it's shutting down.
cheers, Patchen

Nice notes. I've still not tried a D&R wine, must rectify.
I love mature Bandol. I almost carried my lone bottle of '90 Pibaron to a tasting Fri. There used to be a great reasonably priced collection of Bandol (Tempier, Pradeaux, and Pibaron) at a local restaurant (Crabtree's Kittle House) but finally pillaged. Hard to find mature ones on market/

Dale,

We need to find a time to get together again. I would happily pour you a range of the D&R wines.

Yeah, I bought this bottle last year when a very small collection of Tempiers came up for sale -- I'm also sitting on a 99 Tourtine that I bought on release but will hold on to that one, I think.

D&Rs are totally different beasts from any other Mourvedre I've had, and they seem to drink so well young! I'll experiment with aging some, but... it's going to be hard to keep my hands off them.
cheers, Patchen

I'm a big fan of mature Bandol. It is often my first choice for lamb. I had a mixed dozen of Tempier 1997, which have unfailingly enhanced any meals with which I have served them. Alas there are only two bottles of Cabassou left. Most of the pundits did not rate 1997 very highly for Bandol but I found Tempier excellent.

I am saving up a bottle of Pradeaux 1989. An earlier bottle opened over 10 years ago was one of the most ungracious wines I have ever drunk. I am hoping that more time will have cured that.

Bandol gets so little coverage I am surprised that any pundits rated 1997.

And a few others. I recall that in RVF's first report on the vintage they reported Mourvèdre having been a success but that was rapidly forgotten.

Thanks for the reminder - I don't have any 97 Tempier but I do have 94 and 95 that I should get around to.
Opened a few earlier but the funkiness seemed to put some people off (not me, though!)

Yeah, 1994 Tempiers really bring the funk.
