First, the injury: our last bottle of the Edmunds St. John 2000 Paso Robles Red Wine, Rozet Vineyard, "Los Robles Viejos" was corked. Then, the insult: its replacement, a Raymond Usseglio 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, wasn't corked, but it had a nervous breakdown after about 20 minutes in the glass. At first, a ripe-but-coherent mix of cherry and strawberry fruit, earth, and toasty cocoa; then, a hot, boozy, gobby mess, with whatever coherence it once had melting away like little Timmy's fallen scoop of ice cream on an August sidewalk. Blech.
cheers, Patchen
