by TomHill » Fri Mar 23, 2018 10:42 am

Tried this last night:
1. LaClarine Farm al basc Albarino SierraFoothills WW (8 mo. skin contact; U/U; 11.4%;
www.LaClarineFarm.com) HankBeckmeyer/Somerset 2016
: Ton of white/flocculant sediment in bottom of btl; light gold bit hazy color; lovely Albarino/mango/pineapple/floral/carnations some earthy/chalky/mineral rather complex nose; quite tart/acid/tangy bit metallic/steely strong Albarino/mango/pineapple/floral/carnations fairly chalky/mineral rather savory/saline really attractive flavor; very long/lingering classic Albarino/floral/carnations/mango/pineapplequite tangy/metallic/steely savory finish; a rather classic old-World style Albarino; a lovely savory/lip-smackin' expression of Albarino. $28.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. HankBeckmeyer/LaClarine is a "natural" winemaker and one of the darlings of SweetAlice. I ordered a mixed case of Hank's wines last Fall to get a grasp of what he was doing. We tasted thru them last Oct. My TN then on this Albarino:

bizarre skin-contact white; needs food w/ it to tame the bitterness. $28.00

This wine is definitely not the Albarino we had last Oct. I struggled to find any phenolic/skin-contact character in this wine. Totally/totally different beasts.
In Oct, I had the Albarino about a week after it had arrived. So....is this concrete evidence of "travel shock"?? Bottle variation? Who the heck knows.
Maybe it's just the inborn risk of drinking "natural" wines?? Beats heck out of me. But last night, this Albarino was absolutely delicious. Will retry the PetiteManseng this weekend.
