Red vs. white, consumption history

by Jenise » Sat Apr 07, 2018 2:00 pm

This topic came up a few years ago, and I didn't quite recognize myself in the numbers because we drink a lot of white that never gets inventoried. Well, make that drank. I've made more a point of logging everything. The numbers I just ran, on a lark, tend to bear out what I think is closer to truth. We drink at least 30% white/rose. And the average value shows my increased willingness to spend more for the whites we do drink--though champagne helps drive that up, too.

Red 72.5% Consumed (1,615) / Value: average $43.71 / total $70,590.06
White 25.0% Consumed (557) / Value: average $37.59 / total $20,936.73
Rosé 2.6% Consumed (57) / Value: average $29.77 / total $1,696.94
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Interesting topic! My total is: Consumed (588) / Price: average 14,85 €

Out of which:

White 80,8% Consumed (475) / Price: average 15,11 €
Red 12,9% Consumed (76) / Price: average 13,82 €
Rosé 6,1% Consumed (36) / Price: average 13,73 €
Other 0,2% Consumed (1) / Price: average 10,70 €

The main driver of white is Riesling as it's just too delicious and affordable, or well at least when NOT purchasing from The Monopoly.

Riesling 51,9% Consumed (305) / Price: average 14,33 €

And yes I am an unapologetic bargain hunter. :D

So how many weeks/months/years to get that bottle consumption!?

I don't inventory, but would guess that I'm pretty close to 50/50 white/red consumption, maybe 55/45 in favor of red. But the average spend is a bit higher for the reds.

Jenise, does your average rosé cost 30 bucks!? Champagnes included?

Greetings from Sweden / Fredrik L

PS. I have never paid more than 14 Euro for a rosé myself.

I looked at CT and was surprised by the amount of rose wines but looking at them nearly all were used for tastings. Last rose I had was a Rondo in 2013 when we visited an English winery.

During a normal week I open 6 reds, one white (on the day we have fish) and one fizz, usually Champagne (as an aperitif on Sunday)

So, 75% red, 12.5% white, 12.5% sparkling

Since I started using CT about 4 years ago, my consumption split is as follows-

Red 61%, av.value €27
White 36%, av.value €26
Rosé 3%, av.value €16

White and Rosé both include sparklers.

According to my spreadsheet, which goes back to 1992, I've consumed or otherwise disposed of
2036 bottles of red wine, average price $21.59
1146 bottles of white or rose wine, average price $14.90

More white/rose than I thought.

Red 62.9% Consumed (1,853)
White 25.5% Consumed (752)
White - Off-dry 3.9% Consumed (116) /
White - Sparkling 3.9% Consumed (115) /
White - Sweet/Dessert 2.0% Consumed (60)
Rosé - Sparkling 1.0% Consumed (29) /
Red - Fortified 0.4% Consumed (12) /
Red - Sweet/Dessert 0.1% Consumed (3) /
Rosé 0.1% Consumed (3) /
White - Fortified 0.0% Consumed (1) /

From CT. Totally not accurate, I only enter wines I tend to "cellar" . Leaves out NV Champagne, Pepiere Muscadet, most roses, some QbA and Kab Riesling, etc

My guess is my actual consumption of wines I buy would be more like
Red 38%
White Dry 38%
White Offdry- 7%
White - Sparkling 8% /
White Dessert - <1 %
Rosé Sparkling- 3%
Red Fortified- <0.1%
Red Dessert - < 0.01%
Rosé Still 6%

if consumption means wines tasted, reds would move up a bit, as I typically do 3 tasting events a month, and tend to be heavily biased towards red themes.

No it doesn't, Fredrik. I have some Tempiers (about $40) and Tavels ($30ish) but the other 98% we drink are $15-22. And I'll add that, after thinking it over a bit more, I'd probably have to drink a lot of $100+ champagnes to get the white cost up there and throw in a Yquem every once in a while too--where the honest truth is that both are extremely rare experiences. Even with the occasional Liquid Farm and 1er white burg, I would guess my daily white average to be under $25.

Just checked my white wine average cost, and it’s higher than my red wine average cost.

$37 versus $34.

I'm surprised at the consistency of my average costs across the board...Data from 2005 to present
Red 51% ($28.63)
White 43% ($27.36)
Rose 6% ($28.37)

Also noticed that my annual average spending per bottle went from $22 and below for each year from 2005 - 2009 then jumped about 50% to $32 - $36 per bottle each year from 2010 to present. Not sure what drove that jump from 2009 to 2010.

Red 51.8% Value: average $25.16
White 46.8% Value: average $20.61
Rosé 1.4% Value: average $12.91

Big Riesling drinker so I'm close on percentages! This also makes me realize I don't drink enough rose...

I wanted to get into the act, but I haven't been keeping a spreadsheet, so I did the next best thing and developed a quick sheet based on copies of (most) receipts over the past 12 months, archived in Evernote. Here's what I came up with. Smaller potatoes than a lot of you folks since QPR is my thing ...

My total is: Consumed (53) / Price: average $16.03 / range $4.99 to $32.99 / total $796.49

Red 54.7% Consumed (29) / Value: average $14.95 / total $433.72
White 24.5% Consumed (13) Value: average $12.68 / total $164.88
Rosé 3.8% Consumed (2) / Value: average $14.99 / total $29.88
Fortified 15.1% Consumed (8) / Value: average $19.49 / total $155.92
Sparkling 1.9% Consumed (1) / Value: average $11.99 / total $11.99

Since I don't use CT I am just guessing here but one thing is for sure.....no rose, as I avoid it.

Red wine: 70%

White wine: 22%

Champagne: 5%

Dessert wine: 3%

Kasey, my friend!!!! How cool that you found your way here! I've been hanging out with this bunch for years! Used to be a huge group, now it's a small group fragmented by so many different internet opportunities but those who are left are great people with experienced palates. As a riesling fan, you'll have a lot in common with David Bueker who knows more about it than just about anyone.
