WTN: Aloha- '83 and '88 Bordeaux at Noreetuh

by Dale Williams » Fri Apr 13, 2018 10:38 am

Our Bordeaux group met Wednesday at Noreetuh in the East Village. Nice place, great service, wine geeky staff. The food is Hawaiian - influenced and not exactly perfect for Bordeaux , but we made do. Food was all very good, and I’d love to return sans claret to try the ankimo torchon, octopus, various pokes, etc.

2010 Remy Massin Champagne "Special Club"
Green apple, crisp, very BdB. I liked more and more. B+/A-

NV (2010) Christophe Mignon “Pur Meunier” Brut Nature Blanc De Noirs
Big, rich, toasty, stern. Others liked more than I did B

We had truffle taro chips, pork jowl musubi, spicy salmon musubi, & spam musubi. We split a big order of the mochiko fried chicken (which came with pickles including ...strawberry). Most people had wagyu with chinese broccoli & fried rice, I didn’t want to be part of the Borg so ordered the 5 spice pork chop with pineapple spaetzle. Yeah, not dream match (the beef had chili oil), but everything was very good.

Theme was ‘83 and ‘88 Bordeaux

1983 Ch. Canon
Red fruited, herby/spicy, elegant. B+/A-

1988 Ch. Canon

This is a bit horsier than previous bottles. Black fruit, leather, barnyard. Still some tannin. But tasty in a somewhat rustic style. B+/B.

1983 Ch. Gruaud Larose
Quite elegant for GL, red and black currant, tobacco, earth. B+

1988 Ch.Gruaud Larose
Powerful, tannic, black fruited. Needs a steak. B/B+

1983 Ch. Pichon Lalande
Lovely, elegant, cassis framed with coffee and tobacco A-

1988 Ch. Pichon Lalande
A little stern especially at first, but a classic PL in the making- blackcurrant, a pleasant green/herb edge (PV?), sandalwood. B+/B

1983 Ch. L’Evangile
Corked

1988 Ch. La Conseillante
Big, a little stern, tasted more ‘88 than Pomerol. This would have been nice with a TBone. B

1988 La Mission Haut Brion

Deep, long, young, cigarbox and spicebox. Classy. A-

Other than my corked L’Evangile I’d happily drink any of these. WOTN voting
1983 Pichon Lalande 19
1988 La Mission Haut Brion 16
1983 Canon 3
1988 Conseillante 2
1983 Gruaud 1
1988 Gruaud 1

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
