WTN: Two Reds w/ Din/Din....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Apr 23, 2018 12:20 pm

Tried these two last night w/ dinner:
1. Fiore DOC: Nebbiolo d'Alba (14%; www.GiulianaImports.com) Gavone 2015: Med.color; somewhat earthy/dusty light tarry/pungent/tobaccoy light floral/Nebb/lilacs simple/pleasant enough nose; lightly tart/tangy bit angular/austere/hard somewhat earthy/dusty light floral/lilacs/Nebb rather simple flavor w/ light tangy/bitey tannins; med. rather tart/tangy/lean light floral/Nebb/lilacs rather earthy/dusty rather hard/austere/lean very light floral/Nebb finish w/ light bitey tannins; a pleasant enough Langhe Nebb but just that; a rather petulant little w/ slobber running down the front of his shirt; a paucity of Nebb fruit. $15.50 (KK)

2. MacPhail PinotNoir PrattVnyd/SonomaCoast/SonomaCnty (hand harvested/hand sorted; Clones: 114/777/23/Pommard; Aged: 11 mo. sur lie in 100% Fr.oak/50% new; 20 brls; 14.5%; MacPhailWines.com) Healdsburg 2012: Med.dark color; very strong toasty/smokey/pencilly/oak bit earthy/dusty bit Burgundian/smokey some herbal/black cherry/PN bit complex fairly attractive nose; somewhat tart rather toasty/smokey/pencilly/Burgundian/Fr.oak some black cherry/PN/earthy/dusty bit Burgundian flavor w/ light brisk tannins; very long rather toasty/pencilly/smokey/Fr.oak some earthy/dusty/black cherry/PN finish w/ light crinkly tannins; some interesting Burgundian character; reminds some of the old JoeSwans in the late '70's. $41.00 (AV)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Fiore: This was a new wnry for me. There is also an Umberto Fiore in Piemonte. And a Fiore Wnry back in Maryland. They also had a Fiore Barbaresco at $34 but I'm not inclined to spring for it.
____________
2. MacPhail: I'd heard of this wnry but had never tried their wines, even though I've walked past their tasting room in the Barlow. It just showed up on the shelf here in NM. They specialize in a whole bunch of vnyd-designate Chards & Pinots. I wanted to like this wine a whole lot more, but it just had a bit too much Fr.oak for me.
