WTN: mostly rose by river, plus Mugnier, Champagne, Furst

Wednesday was warm, but humdity wasn’t bad, and by time I got to park concert a breeze off the Hudson made it quite lovely. I carried a bunch of leftovers (Korean fried chicken, basil/mozz pasta salad, carrots), as well as some truffle cheese, Boquerones, and Jenise’s blue cheese/almond guacamole. Others shared cheeses, salami, salads, and fruit.

NV Besserat de Bellefon “Cuvee des Moines” Extra Brut Champagne
Crisp, lemon and Granny Smith, some apple blossom. B

2009 Rudolf Furst “"pur mineral"” Müller-Thurgau (Franken)
I’ve liked other vintages of this more, sweet on palate, though there are noticeable acids it seems a tad flabby, though finish does come across as mineral. B-

2017 Triennes rose
Light, fresh, berries and chalk, good value. B/B+

2017 Noulles Rose d’Anjou
Overripe strawberry, sweet, flaccid. Not what I want in a Loire rose. C+/C

2017 Gramercy Cellars Rose
Strawberries and nectarine, fuller styled pink with good finish. B/B+

2016 Parparoussis Petite Fleur
Sour cherry, herbs, nice flavor profile but a little dilute, and maybe beginning to tire. B-

2007 Mugnier “Clos de la Marechale” Nuits St George 1er (375 ml)
Very approachable in half. Red cherry and raspberry, earth and mushroom, gets quite floral with air. Nice balance, lovely wine though I probably wouldn't guess NSG at first, more feminine like a Chambolle or Volnay. B+/A-

2015 Frederic Magnien Bourgogne
New Magnien to me. Ripe, slightly glossy, red cherry with a little vanilla. B-

Nice night. A big crew of friends stayed and watched the sunset fade long after concert ended.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Often cited when drinking the Marechale. He has said that for the most part he makes all the wines the same way. That should allow terroir to show through. I would do a compare from other current producers (not Faivelely due to their former, heavy handed style), but that's obviously not an option.

yes, I never thought when Faiveley had the monopole it was feminine, but at that point no Faiveley was,
So we can't really know if it's that Marechale has more feminine terroir than rest of NSG or if Mugnier's "transparent" style is more marking than we think.

I don't know. The more I drink of Burgundy the more I see producer style intersecting very heavily with terroir.

I believe Frederic and Michel are two of the bigger Magnien names in the US. Used to be with NBI and produce those 500% new oak cuvees, so 'glossy' sounds about right.

Stephane Magnien is the promising new guy in Morey who CSW sells, and has a very different style. I would like to explore more of his stuff, but so little time.

I think there are probably a lot of Magniens!

Good choice on the roses. Gramercy does it well, though it's a heavier wine than the Triennes (which I prefer). Love that chalk-dust thing.
