Wow....Whatta TurnAround...LaClarine Albarino

by TomHill » Wed Jul 18, 2018 10:59 am

Tried this as my white last night:
1. LaClarine Farm al basc Albarino SierraFoothills WW (8 mo. skin contact; U/U; 11.4%; http://www.LaClarineFarm.com) HankBeckmeyer/Somerset 2016: Deep golden/cidery quite cloudy color; very strong cidery/phenolic/resiny light floral/marigold/Albarino/spicy/pungent some stony/chalky bit Kansas haymow/fresh cut grass rather interesting/exotic complex nose; quite tart/lean/austere rather cidery/resiny/phenolic some stony/chalky pungent/bit hawmow/dusty some tannic/bitey interesting/complex flavor w/ light bitey tannins; very long/lingering quite tart/tangy/austere very dry strong phenolic/resiny/cidery slight floral/Albarino/pungent/marigold some stony/chalky quite complex finish; still lots of phenolic/skin-contact character but other things are starting to come out; badly needs food with it and be served at cool room temperature to reduce the tannic bite; quite an exotic wine that I suspect will be even better at 10 yrs; reminds a lot of the Kabaj Amphora wine. $28.00

: Med.gold bit burnished bronze quite cloudy color;
very strong appley/apple juice/apple cider rather phenolic/resiny baked/spiced apples rather complex
nose; very tart/tangy/metallic rather phenolic/apple cider/resiny some baked spiced apples bit bitter
quite tannic/apple skin quite skin-contact white flavor; very long quite tart/tangy bit bitter/apple skin
rather phenolic/resiny/apple cider some earthy some baked spicy apples quite resiny finish; no obvious
Albarino character and lots of resiny/skin-contact white character; quite an interesting/unusual/maybe
bizarre skin-contact white; needs food w/ it to tame the bitterness. $28.00

The wine is still dominated by the phenolic character but the bitterness seems to be going down and other secondary characteristics seem to be coming out. I'd really like to try this wine again in 10 yrs as I suspect it'll be something pretty special.

2. LaClarine: This is the "natural" wnry of Hank Beckmeyer. One of the darlings of SweetAlice. He makes some really interesting wines, not always to everybody's taste. Used to work (maybe still does) at ShenandoahVnyds/SobonEstate.

Left the half consumed btl in the fridge overnight. The next morning it had developed classic Hantavirus character..mousey, stale mouse pee & turds like in a mouse nest when you restack your woodpile. Same thing in the nose. Absolutely dreadful when it hits the palate. I guess that what you get in a "natural" wine.
