2001 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (9/13/2018)
Seventeen years from the vintage, and this is in a perfect place. It still has some primary fruit, but it is an ensemble member, rather than the star. Stony, smoky and seashore saline elements are also part of the mix, and the palate presence is most impressive. I was having it with some spicy Chinese food (good match BTW), so it would have been easy to just drink it, and move on, but it commanded attention. I took a few minutes to savor a bit of the wine, and it reminded me why I love the 2001 vintage, and why I love Dönnhoff's wines from the Hermannshöhle.
