Your Top 20 (Purchased) Producers

Trying to rank producers according to preference feels pretty impossible to me, but I thought this was a pretty interesting and a little bit more objective way of approaching that topic.

What I did was just to list my purchases on cellartracker grouped by producer and sorted by quantity:

Interesting. You have several producers I'm not familiar with- unsure if imported into US- Tesch, Bablut, Recaredo , Wechsler Dreissigacker.

I'm a bad CT enterer- I tend to enter pricier bottles I plan on cellaring longterm, and not enter wines that I think I'll mostty drink soon. Pepiere is almost certainly my number 1 buy, but no where near top on CT. Same with Coudert, Foillard, Vissoux. And QbA/Kab in general.
Plus after I copied top 20 I realized default sort was by cost, some L'Evangile in top 20, but not Edmunds St John, Willi Schaefer
or Zilliken, though CT shows 3X a many bottles bought (and I don't generally enter ESJ rose , gamay, HofG, etc, nor most German kabs). So this is not accurate at all, but since I already copied and trimmed

Dale - Tesch has been showing up in some shops here in NJ. A few months back I had tried a couple of their '15s (Laubenheimer St. Remigiusberg and Krone, IIRC) - mineral driven dry styles, and nicely priced. As for my top 20, my wine buying is not organized enough to give a list.

I have more Chateau Montelena in my cellar than anything else.

I used to track my cellar, but that fell by the wayside. I buy a lot of American wine, living IN wine country. So, my collection is not dominated really by any few producers.

Wow, so you're a big fan of Rhys? Or is that because the wines are sitting waiting for age? I don't think I've ever tried them, and from the looks of recent prices they will not be high on my list for exploration, even though they may be great. (Just too many other areas)

I'm not looking at the numbers but I know that my biggest holding by far is Louis Boillot, which completely dominates my red Burgundy holdings. Although I am spreading out a bit more in recent years. And in part that is because I'm still waiting to drink most of the vintages. 05, 08, and 10-14. Maybe a few 09s.

After Boillot it is ESJ, so many wines that can take more age.

I do enjoy Rhys, especially their Syrah. I also have more than I likely would because they do futures of 375ml and 500ml bottles. That is most of what I have been buying the last few vintages. Really nice wines in convenient sizes.

Tesch like mentioned above is great quality for the price. Their Krone bottlings normally develop a matured flavour profile very quickly, somewhat resembling an aged sweet spätlese aromatically though obviously dry. But it's their Königsschild bottling that is the most intriguing for me because in select vintages (like 2013 and 2015) it's absolutely immaculate, as if drinking straight from the purest of mountain streams but somehow it's wine instead of water. It's very light on fruit but carries an enormous amount of energy on the palate, sort of like the Muscadet of Riesling.

Bablut is on the list only because the Vins-etonnants webshop in France sells fantastic mature versions of their Coteaux de l'Aubance bottlings (neighboring appellation to Savennieres but wines are made in a style more resembling moelleux Vouvray, or Coteaux du Layon) for very attractive prices. I've had almost 20 bottles from vintages ranging 1972 to 1999 with zero flawed bottles and with prices ranging from 15 to 25 EUR.

Recaredo is the finest Cava I've tasted par none. Forget Gramona if you enjoy a rocky and earthy style of bubbly.

Wechsler and Dreissigacker are rising stars in the Rheinhessen. Dreissigacker makes supremely textured/structured, full bodied Rieslings, though they are shy on fruit in their youth so can be a little challenging for the uninitiated, whereas Wechsler's Rieslings are just pure elegance, and they actually remind me a little of Dönnhoff's stony trocken bottlings with absolutely clean and delicious fruit.

My top 20 is just way to long, but here's the first 6 or so... After this a bunch of random producers come in that I picked up a case at one point or another when they were on special.

Sandlands I've been on their list for years so it starts to add up, especially considering I'm only on two mailing lists, theirs and Cayuse. Wind Gap I've always been a fan of but until recently had only had a few bottles. Since they've been on clearance recently I've picked up a ton... Guion and Selbach-Oster are two that I drink often and buy often as well. Then Produttori I find to be one of, if not the best value collectible wines, I pick up the reserve wines whenever they are released. Which brings me to Argyle, my wife's favorite, happy wife happy life!

I was surprised that my top 5 only account for less than 15%, but apparently not.

The last is a small producer, only a few dozen rows of vines, but a sentimenal favorite. I'm a bit surprised there's not more Mosel up there, but I buy more broadly, there are a bunch of producers that I like.
