by TomHill » Sun Oct 21, 2018 3:12 pm

Not seen a Shiraz before from LaChirapada, so sprung for:
1. LaChirapada Shiraz Reserve MimbresVlly/NM RTW (13%; www.LaChirapada.com; 100 cs) Dixon/NM 2016: Med.dark color; strong plummy/blackberry/boysenberry/ripeSyrah some vanilla/toasty/oak very slight herbal/sagebrush/chamisa/pungent rather attractive/interesting nose; very soft/fat/underacid some blackberry/Syrah/plummy some herbal/sagebrush/chamisa fairly toasty/vanilla/oak bit dull/rough/rustic flavor w/ very light vapid tannins; med.short slight tangy/metallic soft/fat light plummy/Syrah/blackberry/boysenberry/ripe rather rough/rustic/coarse some herbal/sage/chamisa bit vapid finish w/ light rough/coarse tannins; a pleasant/interesting nose but a big fail on the palate; way overpriced at $32.50 (KK)

1. LaChirapada is a NM wnry, run by the Johnson brothers, that has been around quite awhile. Over the yrs, I've found there wines to be OK, just that, and a bit on the rustic side. Their wines from the EmbudoVlly are a bit more interesting.
These grapes come from Paola's vnyd down in Deming/NM. Pretty hot growing area for grapes. His is the largest vnyd in NM and he sells a lot to other wineries. This high-desert area is surrounded by typical high-desert vegetation, namely sagebrush and chamisa. You brush up against them and the pungent smell persists on your clothing. These plants also spawn their oils into the air and they settle on the skins of the grapes. Wines made from Paola's grapes often display a distinct sage/chamisa aromas & flavors. BlackMesa does a better job than any NM wnry in eradicating this taint, probably because they brush each grape in the bunch w/ a wet Q-Tip afore fermenting.
