WTN: Not that Saint Julien

2009 Eric Texier Côtes du Rhône Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban Vieille Serine Domaine de Pergaud - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban (10/21/2018)
It was too soon to open this, but after two consecutive corked bottles, I went back to the well one more time. Given thirty minutes or so to unfurl, it was delicious, with deep, dry black fruit, and endless depths of meat, leather, earth and olive notes, underscored by firm, yet 0lush tannins. The balance suggests a long future, though it gives a lot of pleasure right now. If I had a bunch (I don’t), I would drink one a year forever. Given that I only have a few, my next bottle will be 3-4 years from now.

Interesting. The St Julien Pergaud is generally more accessible than the Brezeme Pergaud, so I keep hoping I can drink those first. But it's all relative, and these do seem to need time to unwind.

Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban is near Valence but on the right bank of the Rhône. That is at the northern extremity of the South and in my experience the wines from there can show a lot more finesse than those from closer to Avignon.

I guess that it is a blend of Grenache and Syrah.

It sounds great. Believe it or not I've never had a wine from Texier. Amongst both French and Belgian cavistes, the label négociant is a turn-off. I must look around.

Texier's is 100% syrah.
