2006 Felsina Chianti Riserva Rancia
Took my last of two bottles (the other was fine about two years ago) of this to a friend's for dinner on Saturday night. He was making Italian pot roast (a fantastic dish). Terribly disappointing--no flaws in particular, it was the right color and all that. It was just flat and listless on the nose and palate--some earth but no fruit, no acid. A complete dud.

I had a similar experience quite recently which I attributed in part to a marchand de vin sauce (wine, veal juices, shallots and butter) being too powerful for it. However most vintages of Rancia would have had no difficulty in standing up to that sauce.

Hi Tim, this was definitely the wine not the food. It was just one of those inexplicable dogs.

Jenise,
I was looking at CT to see if I had the '06 (I don't) and note your TN there says "musty" (and that you really liked last year). Are you sure not corked?
I generally like the Rancia, but seem more likely recently to buy regular CC or splurge for Fontalloro

Yes, I am sure it wasn't corked. Musty was about the only aroma it had but not bad musty, just old musty. The difference between this bottle and last year's was like two balloons--one with air, one deflated.

That is way too quick for it to be a sound bottle. Rancia does not just fall off a cliff. Heck, the 1997 is still quite tasty, as is the 2004.

Oh I get it. I read others' notes on CT. It's flawed, I just can't say TCA is what's at fault. There was nothing off in that way, just no 'there' there.

Low level TCA, stripping away the flavor. Happens.

I guess. I'm in mourning. Just opened a Chapoutier La Sizzeranne that's preternaturally OTH.

Huh. Commonality with sources? You get an awful lot of prematurely dead bottles, making me wonder about provenance where you shop. I know your storage is good.

No, different sources. But in each of these two cases, I had a second bottle that was just fine, therefore I presume the issues with both were born at the winery.

2004. Another bottle was okay, but not great. I have '95 which is still rocking, too.

2004 Felsina Rancia that I opened yesterday was clearly heat damaged.

Second bottle that had the issue, bought on release from two different retailers. Perhaps the importer or more likely distributor screwed the pooch on caring for the wine.

I had better luck and rated mine excellent. It restored my faith in Rancia after my 2006's rather weak showing. Last week's 1995 was excellent too in a more refined vein than most Rancia.

Reinforces my belief that my bottles were damaged.
