WTN: 2015 Rotie

by Jim Grow » Sat Nov 17, 2018 9:47 pm

This wine is from Wash. state and not the northern Rhone. From Rotie Cellars, this 2015 Northern Blend is 94% Syrah and 6% Viognier. Totally lovely wine with mellow syrah flavors and obvious Viognier. There is a funkiness mixed in with the syrah fruit which makes it OH so interesting and gulpable. My first of 4 bottles and will next try this wine in 5 years. Great balance and can see this wine gaining complexity over the coming years but very enjoyable now. Washington State rules! abv of 14,5%

Rotie wines drink well young, and I don't know that I would be looking for them to be a long haul wine. More medium term than long.

I was expecting something that started with Côte.

Me too. Guess we need a WA winery called Cote Cellars to amalgamate with Rotie to get that.....

Rotie makes four wines, two white, two red, one each south and north. Very good wines, too.

Here's a note from a few months ago on one of Rotie's whites:

2016 Rôtie Cellars Grenache Blanc Columbia Valley
Blind tasted. Stunning. Understated pear and melon flavors blend seamlessly with generous minerality and acidity--tastes more European than domestic in all the good ways.

Somehow the fact that they could do a white that emulates a Rhone impresses me more than the red. Too bad we don't get them up here in the Great White!

There are a few here who are doing it all quite well.
