WTN: Alzinger GrunerVeltliner Durnstein '17..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Jan 15, 2019 11:39 am

Had this last night w/ my Kasekrainer:
1. Alzinger GrunerVeltliner Durnstein Federspiel (12.5%; www.Alzinger.At; SkurnikWines/TerryTheise) Unterloiben/Durnstein/Wachau 2017: Light gold color; lovely GV/floral/white pepper/spicy pure/focused GV quite aromatic nose; rather tart/tangy/bit lean bright/zippy GV/floral/carnations/light white pepper totally dry focused GV/spicy flavor; very long bright/GV/floral/white pepper light mineral/chalky bit lean finish; a bright/focused/spare pure GV like a good Mosel Kabinett Trocken.
$31.00 (AV)

1. Last Sat, ArroyoVino did a tasting of Alzinger wines. I liked them quite a lot, across the board. This one, particularly for its purity of GV fruit on a rather spare frame. But they are a bit pricey compared to the IngridGroiss wines.

While I like Alzinger, I won't pay the price for the federspiel wines. I will pay for the smaragd wines, as they represent something special.

I find myself more and more drawn to Federspiel rather than Smaragd.
But I agree than Alzinger on pricey side.
But this sounds good.

Sure the wines aren't cheap. But $55-60 for Wachau smaragd does not seem like more than other top producers.

Me too, Dale. I like the liveliness they often show as opposed to the weight & intensity of a Smaargd.
Federspiel is to Smaargd as MonteBello is to any $100+ NapaVlly Cabernet.

It’s actually in line, and even “cheap” for Wachau, but you can often do as well or better in the Kamptal or Kremstal. That’s why I only buy Alzinger from time to time versus annual.

Fair enough. And I agree. It's why I haven't bought Alzinger in a while, the value relative to other regions. But I did like them in the past and have thought about re-visiting.
