Five wines from South Africa, all in-store pours:

2016 Alphabetical Vin Ordinaire (field blend) Western Cape Red Blend
Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Shiraz. The Cab Franc is way out in front, dark berry, spice, greenery, and lots of dust. I love dusty wines--bought two bottles.

2016 Fable Mountain Vineyards The Raptor Post Western Cape Red Blend
50% Grenache Noir, 39% Syrah, 11% Mourvedre. Bright cherry red--a wine that seems 100% unwooded grenache and shows neither of the other two grapes. Tasty but not compelling (especially after I tasted the cab franc that followed it).

2016 Botanica Pinot Noir Mary Delany Collection Elgin
Other tasters were complaining that it was 'thin' and didn't recognize that this is a stylistic choice. I know the wine from a past vintage and understand the difference but, especially with only about a teaspoon of wine to judge it by, can't blame the unfamiliar New World palate for hating it.

2017 David & Nadia Chenin Blanc Swartland
Good body and complexity, excellent varietal typicity. Would buy.

2017 The Winery of Good Hope Vinum Africa Unoaked Chardonnay Stellenbosch
Lighter bodied, clean and refreshing, good at $15.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
