WTN: King of the Mont

My new #1 Chateneuf du Pape experience thanks to Warren Tarranow:

1964 Chateau Mont-Redon Chateneuf du Pape
There are almost no words to describe the euphoria created by this bottle. In outstanding condition, medium orange-y red, full and heady tertiary notes of leather, old books and granite-like minerality blended with cherry pie, crust and all. An absolutely remarkable wine.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Wow, sounds great. I've never had a Mont Redon that old,. but have had the '71 (very good) and '78 (great).
And they still make balanced CdP.
Thanks for notes

Old Mont Redon is a revelation.

Dale and Dave, I thought this was either 95 or 98--THAT'S how good it was. It's the first old Mont Redon I've had. Are modern Mont Redons thought to have that kind of longevity?

I'm sure with warming alcohol is creeping up, but still amongst lowest in appellation (excluding overcropping supermarket negoce stuff). Only bottle I have handy is '04 which is 14%, restrained for CdP. And they apparently are making wines pretty much same way - without new oak, minimal filtering, etc.

I had the 2014 last week and enjoyed it. It felt like the house was totally oblivious to Parker scores.

I can't recall ever having one before. I've got 109 different CdP labels in the cellar and it's not one of them. Must rectify!

If you read Parker reviews from the 1990s, he would bitch and moan that Redon no longer made wines like the 1964. No, they never changed!

That being said, climate change has altered the balance point, and Redon does not seem to have adapated. Of course, I don’t have 50 years left to check!
