WTN: 2017 Riesling x 2

by Rahsaan » Sat Sep 25, 2021 11:41 am

2017 Lauer Ayler Kupp Kabinett Fass 8
Opens nicely with a bit of air to show brisk crisp and firm with verdant lime flavors; speaking very nicely of the Saar and so easy to drink too quickly.

2017 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Kabinett
This also opens nicely with air, as the flavors get more and more vivid over several hours. Tangy, juicy, firm, not dense or heavy, but decently layered and long and very nice. Again, so easy to drink too quickly.

Verdant is a word that expresses so much.

Indeed. For some reason ‘verdant’ has always popped into my head as a good wine descriptor, for flavors but also the tone of the wine.

Bright, fresh, but also more alive than either of those words conveys.

'Verdant' indicated green foliage so the use with lime was perfect, although your type of verdure could vary.

I have a surfeit of verdure this summer, but sadly it consists of horsetails.....

On the topic of Riesling, read a Jancis post today about wine leftovers. She noted that partial bottles of Riesling can really last. I can probably find the link and post if anyone is interested.

It’s pretty well known, though “last” is not the same as “improve” or “sustain.”

Yes, FWIW, I had a bit of both of these bottles left over the next day and they did not improve to my tastes. They were certainly still 'drinkable', but I did not see the need.

I think I have that Lauer. I have a couple boxes of mixed 2017s that I think I ordered and have never opened. Too much Riesling, too little time.
As to the lasting once open, I agree Riesling does well (as do most high acid whites, Chenin is also notable). Occasionally a young Riesling is better for my tastes on day 2. But in general it's a case of declining slower than most wines. But I almost never dump Riesling or Chenin, for several days if is usually quaffable, maybe as an apertif if we have having red with dinner (or being used for cooking). If i was alone and on a tight wine budget could definitely stretch a bottle.
