  • 2018 Idlewild Barbera Fox Hill Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (1/12/2022)
    Buxom and also a little strident. It’s that bi-polar creature that is Barbera, with all sorts of fruit richness, and a touch of volatility that brings extra lift to the acidity. This is better with food that tames the acidity, but it is still enjoyable on its own. Drink soon to enjoy the exuberance.

Good advice for many wines, isn't it? As much as I enjoy aged wines, I am sometimes guilty of revelling in that youthful exuberance and then hanging onto the wines beyond that point and not enjoying them half as much.

Same here. Mostly it happens when I buy six of something, and end up with 2 or 3 that aren't as much fun as they should have been.

So easy advice...buy less.

That's a good descriptor for Barbera (and perhaps Dolcetto)...."Bi-Polar".
The acidity & structure oft suggests it'll be better w/ age. But sometiimes it's just
best to enjoy it in its exhuberent youth.
