WTN: 2002 Burgs, + 00/16 Mouches blanc, Pinot Gouges, Bolly

Our Bordeaux group veered to Burgundy yesterday, to take a look at 2002 at 20. We gathered at Wu’s Wonton King. We shared a king crab (steamed with ginger and garlic, fried, and fried rice in the carapace; there was also a 1/2 suckling pig.(skin with bao buns, then roast pieces. Fried anchovies (with the Champagne), pork belly soy sauce chicken, aromatic chicken, lamb chops with black pepper sauce, preserved vegetable with pork belly, pea sprouts with dried scallop. Yum

2004 Bollinger Grande Annee
I’m not usually a huge Bollys fan, but this has a lot of verve. Apples, biscuits, and some vanilla creme, but bright acids driving it along nicely. B+/A-

2016 Drouhin Clos de la Mouches Blanc
Young, a bit primary, but really nice bones. Pear, honeysuckle, and vanilla, racy, long finish, just needs a little time for oak to integrate. B+ already, will trend toward A I bet.

2000 Drouhin Clos de la Mouches Blanc
Roundness of the vintage shows, but this has plenty of life to it. Pear, hazelnut, mineral. B+/B

2002 Raveneau Butteaux Chablis 1er
Minerally, crunchy acids, lemon, herbs, and spice. A-

2012 Gouges Perriere Nuits St George blanc
This was supposed to be backup to 2000 Mouches if it was premixed, Drouhin was fine, but we needed more white for next round of crab. Served a little warm, but I liked anyway- citrus, saline, a little grass. Good finish. B+

2002 Jadot Clos des Ursules Beaune 1er
Seemed a bit tight, but solid wine. Red fruit, damp earth, coffee. B/B+

2002 Drouhin Clos de la Mouches Beaune 1er
A wine l love, and I liked last night, but I thought bottle maybe a bit more advanced than others I’ve had. Still an excellent wine, just without as much left in tank. Black cherry, campfire, gamebird, this bottle fully mature. B+

2002 Roumier Clos de la Bussiere Morey St Denis 1er
Slightly lifted nose, red and blacky cherry, some rather awkward tannin, but exotic sandalwood nose. I liked, but maybe not as much as 2001 couple months ago. B

2002 Hudelot-Noellat Les Beaumonts Vosne Romanee 1er
Red plum and raspberry, incense, anise. Rich and balanced, good length. A-/B+

2002 Chevillon Les St George Nuits St George 1er
Youthful, but complex and refined. Black cherry, cocoa, tobacco, earth. Lovely A-

2002 Chevillon Vaucrains Nuits St George 1er
I liked this even better! Rich, can age 30 years, but delightful now. Red and black cherry, sandalwood, loamy soil, espresso. A-/A

2002 H.Boillot Clos Vougeot
Oak tannin, rich dark fruits, plush. B/B+

2002 Bouchard Pere Echezeaux
Dark fruits, coffee, roast meat. Very nice length. B+/A-

Fun night with good crowd

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
