WTN: A White/A Rose/A Red....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Aug 07, 2022 6:04 pm

Tried these three w/ Susan this weekend:
1. Massican gaspare Dd'OC: Bianco Friuli Colli Orientali (13.5%; 44% Friulano/29% RibollaGialla/27% Chard) P&B by Ronco Del Gnemiz/Natisone/Italy 2017: Med.gold color w/ lots of tiny bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass; strong floral/gardenias/Friulano/fairly spicy some perfumed talc/mineral slight waxy rather complex nose; lightly tart strong floral/gardenias/Friulano/spicy/bit white pepper some tangy/metallic bit mineral/perfumed talc fairly complex flavor; very long/lingering lightly tart some perfumed talc/mineral strong floral/Friulano fairly rich complex bit waxy finish; developing some really nice nuances & should go another 4-8 yrs; quite a lovely Friulano.

2. iruai LoungeLizard Rose of Teroldego Calif (12%; https://iruaiwine.com/) Methode Sauvage/Etna/Calif 2012: Deep burnished bronze/some browning rather cloudy/hazy color; fairly natty/mousey rather earthy/loamy bit root cellar/Kansas outhouse bit metallic slight chery nose little fruit nose; rather sour quite earthy/loamy little fruit slight cherry some phenolic/VM/rather cidery some natty/mousey bit bitter flavor w/ slight tannic bite; med.long rather earthy/loamy some natty/mousey/unclean/funky slight cherry rather earthy/loamy little fruit finish w/ slight bitter tannins; more like a light red than a rose; lacks the fresh/high-toned character of a good rose; definitely some natty character but not enough to make it undrinkable. $21.50 (KK)

3. iruai Shasta-Cascade American RW (12.5%; 30% Trousseau/20% Mondeuse/10% Blaufrankisch/20% PinotNoir/20% PinotGris) MethodeSauvage/Etna 2021: Med.light color; quite earthy/loamy slight black cherry/Pinotish rather rustic slight natty/unclean little fruit nose; fairly tart/tangy rather earthy/loamy/dusty bit root cellar slight black cherry somewhat aged flavor w/ light rough tannins; med. rather earthy/loamy slight black cherry little fruit rather rustic/coarse aged finish w/ light coarse tannins; reminds of a rustic/coarse peasant red from the Languedoc or an old Barengo red from Lodi in the '70's; little fruit & not very attractive & old before its time, but no natty character to speak of. $21.50 (KK)

More likkerfrazz from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Massican: This was DanPetrowski's first white that he made in Friuli. Most (young) Friulanos can be a bit on the simple/fruity side, but this one is developing some beautiful nuanced character.

2. Where the heck is Etna CA. It's way the hell & gone in the CoastRange Mtns of Northern CA, NW of Redding and about 30 mi South of the OR border. Don't think the got many neighbors.
This is a wnry started by Chad and Michelle Westbrook Hinds in Berkeley afore they moved to the Mt.Shasta/Cascades way up there. Mostly they are buying their grapes in Northern Calif, but they have a vnyd in the ground up there, farmed by Fukuoka methods. They proclaim themselves as natural winemakers. This is my first exposure to the iruai wines. I'll probably try them again but not get my hopes up.

Glad you held onto a bottle of the Gaspare. I drank all three of mine quite early.

The iruai wines have been relatively popular up here. That is, certain local wine geeks who despair over anything that could possibly be commercially successful are nuts about them, and the rest of us look on askance. I bought two myself, one a syrah, and have tasted a few others in mixed company. I don't get it.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
