WTN: Three Carlisle Vnyd Zins...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Aug 18, 2022 5:20 pm

At the end of our Bedrock Dolinsek Zin tasting, I included these three Zins from Carlisle vnyd:
1. Carlisle Zin CarlisleVnyd/RRV/SonomaCnty (15.0%; Plntd: 1927 by AlcidePelletti; U/U; + PetiteSirah/GrandNoir/
AlicanteBouschet/Tempranillo/Peloursin; 335 cs) 2017
: Med.dark color; strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/very spicy some dusty/OV light toasty/oak slight earthy some complex nose; lightly tart strong blackberry/Zin/very spicy pretty dusty/OV light toasty/oak bit RRV Zin/peppery rather complex flavor w/ modest ripe tannins; very long/lingering strong blackberry/Zin/very spicy some peppery some toasty/oak rather dusty/OV finsh w/ some ripe tannins; shows the most dusty/OV character; a classic Carlisle/Carlisle that's showing some signs of maturity but can go another 2-5 yrs. $44.00

2. Bedrock Zin CarlisleVnyd/RRV/SonomaCnty (14.5%; Plntd: 1927; Farmed: Mike & Kendall Officer) 2018: Very dark color; very strong/intense nlackberry/boysenberry/Zin/some spicy some dusty/OV more toasty/oak bit complex nose w/ more depth & intensity; lightly tart fairly strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/spicy bit softer/riper more toasty/oak some dusty/OV more extracted more depth some complex flavor w/ modest chewey tannins; very long/lingering rather toasty/oak intense blackberry/boysenberry/spicy Zin/slight peppery light dusty/OV bit complex finish w/ some chewey tannins; much like the Carlisle '17 but less complexity, more depth & extraction & more toasty/oak in character; a beautiful Bedrock that needs another 3-7 yrs. $39.00

3. Carlisle Zin CarlisleVnyd/RRV/SonomaCnty (15.0%) 2019: Med.dark color; pretty much the same nose as the '17 but more youthful/lush fruit & less complex & less dusty/OV character; some tart strong lush/ripe strong blackberry/Zin/lightly spicy slight dusty/OV slight RRV/peppery less complex flavor w/ some chewey tannins; a pretty classic Carlisle/Carlisle than needs another 2-6 yrs to soften the tannins; somewhat more polished & smoother than the Bedrock.
$48.00

More kafferpirtle from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. All three of these Zins were terrific. My slight preference was the Bedrock for its greater youthful intensity.
I have, of course, followed the Carlisle vnyd from the very start. Back in the early '80's, Cecil DeLoach made some 3-4 vnyd designate Zins. The Pelletti Vnyd was one of those. Cecil trademarked the names of those 4 OV Zin vnyds so nobody else could use that name on their label. Including MikeOfficer when he bought that vnyd. Mike & Kendall lived in that old house on the property for a number of yrs & Riley & Rachel attended the grade school just down the road. But it was a pretty run-down house & they eventually moved back into SantaRosa into a more modern/smaller but not really luxurious home. Cecil eventually agreed to allow Mike to use the Pelletti vnyd designation, but Mike had been labeling it as the Carlisle Vnyd and making far better Zins from it than Cecil ever did, so he's stuck with the CarlisleVnyd designation on his wines.
It is truly one of the great OV Zin vnyds in Calif.

Always fun to do those sorts of comparisons.
