WTN: Come on and take a Frei ride!

So I brought home some of the old Gallo of Sonoma Cabernets that were such a hot item back in the 1990s. Opened the first one tonight.

1994 Gallo of Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Frei Ranch Vineyard
Quite a lot of bricking, and even some browning at the edge. Surprisingly translucent. Not the impenetrable hue of most Cal Cabs - even older bottles. On the nose there is the unmistakable aroma of decay - leaves that have fallen and been left through the winter. On the palate there’s a bottle sweetness. It’s a lot like an older Bordeaux that has turned the final corner, tossing out some old memories as it waves goodbye. So this is not quite a crypt wine. More like assisted living with impending hospice. Not so bad for $14.99.
