WTN: 1996 Seppelts Original Sparkling Shiraz, Victoria

by Mark Wickman » Mon Mar 12, 2007 10:28 pm

Always a little pearler on a hot night, this sparkling wine matures fantastically. Personally, I don't like to drink it too cold as the flavours are muted but open up as the wines temperature starts to climb. At the moment the 1996 is starting to lighten up around the rim a bit, the nose is full of jammy cherry and a hint of plum which follows through on the palate with some nice fresh acidity, fruit tanins and good length.

No, the Show reserve is released later and I believe (but am not sure) it's a barrel or vineyard selection.

I've had a 1986 Show reserve previously, and last week the equivalent 1990. Both were complex, but it is very much an acquired style, with it difficult to get past the touch of sweetness even from the better producers. As a result, I find myself giving them a decent chill, which I can't help feeling defeats the object of aged wine. A unique wine style though and for that I applaud the producers.

regards

Ian
