WTN: Guido Porro '04 "Paesan" (Langhe Nebbiolo/Barbera)

by Mike Filigenzi » Fri Mar 23, 2007 1:14 am

Picked this wine up last Saturday and the poor thing was still sitting in the kitchen when I got home from work, just waiting to be consumed. It's an 80/20 blend of "Obtained mixed nebbiolo wine" and 20% "barrique Barbera wine". A Kermit Lynch import weighing in at 14% alcohol and purchased for somewhere around $20, I think? I know nothing of Guido Porro, but it sounded interesting.

Clear medium-red in color. Bright, spicy, slightly herbal nose with some strawberry character to it. In the mouth, it has quite a bit going on with more of that bright fruit up front and initial taut acidity that starts to get a little buried in the tannins that rise up in the mid-palate and dominate the finish. Not unpleasant, though, and a little darker fruit helps add complexity. I would think this is one to drink now rather than age.

Overall, a very nice wine. We had it with quiche made with bacon and swiss cheese and it worked pretty well.

Sounds nice, Mike. Where, if I might ask, did you buy this intriguing blend?

I picked it up at Kermit Lynch's place in Berkeley. (Wish they had it at the Nugget!)

Yes, interesting. I always saw this at Kermit's shop but never got around to buying it. Thanks for the note.

FWIW, I think Guido Porro is a fairly reputable if not outstanding producer of QPR Barolo. Sometimes Kermit used to put them on sale, and then they were even better value.

Didn't know he was a Barolo producer. Thanks - I'm always on the lookout for decent Barolo that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
