WTN: Flat Rock Cellars Chardonnay 2004

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Mar 27, 2007 7:58 pm

Niagara Penninsula.

Clean, minerally nose, with lemon custard.

Tangy acidity, lemon, pears and green apples, toasty. Strikes a perfect balance between the oak and the fruit, with a lean structure and bracing acidity to keep it all lively and refreshing.

Delicious.

Good, clean, lemon-tinged mouthwatering finish.

Screwcap closure.

Yup.

Others on the board will be able to provide more detailed info on the winery as, I believe, they visited it on the last Niagara McCool event.

Bruce, we didn't visit there during NiagaraCOOL, but I met up with PaulB at Cave Spring last Spring and after being disappointed in their tour, we drove around and stumbled into Flat Rock. We had a very nice tour and talked with the owner/winemaker. All their wines are excellent. I believe they make only Chard, Riesling and Pinot Noir and all under screwcap. Very interesting winery, located on the scenic escarpment. I have a bottle of their PN on hold. I can't seem to find my post about the visit. :?

Bruce,
While searching for my post about visiting Flat Rock (which I still can't find) I found the following:

It's like deja-vu all over again. :D

Thanks for the note, Bruce.

I've had their Twisted - a blend of Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurz. As strange as that combination sounds, I really enjoyed it.

Here were my notes: Lemon and ripe red apple on the nose and palate, with a near-perfect balance of acid and fruit. Very crisp and refreshing, comes to a minerally finish.

I didn't enjoy the Gravity Pinot Noir quite as much, however. I thought it was a bit green.

There are none that I can find in Alberta; I bought mine while on a business trip to Toronto. I'm planning on visiting again this summer, so I might grab some more Twisted.

Thanks for the additional insights Mike. I notice on the winery web site that they deliver to residences in Ontario. They would charge only $20 per order to deliver to my house, so I am seriously thinking of ordering some wine from them. I suppose I could order one or two of each to start and then reorder larger quantities if I like something.

Flat Rock was by far one of my favorite stops on mt whirlwind tour 2 summers ago. Beautiful place, and the wine was quite good all around as well.

I've still got the 2003 Pinot Noir that I bought...time to open very soon, I think.
