What are your "back up the truck" experiences? The good, the bad, the ugly.

should have - '85 Lynch Bages ($25)

good - a couple of Marietta Old Vines lot XX (lot in the teens), mid 80s Guigal CdR, mid 80s Domaine de Trevallon.

bad - '97 Domaine d'Andezon CdR (got really weird after 9 months)

GEORGE: "Master of the house.. doling out the charm, ready with a handshake and an open palm. Tells a saucy talke, loves to make a stir everyone appreciates a.."

JERRY: What is that song?

GEORGE: Oh, it's from Les Miserables. I went to see it last week... I can't get it out of my head... I just keep singing it over and over. It just comes out. I have no control over it. I'm singing it on elevators, buses. I sing it infront of clients. It's taking over my life!

JERRY: You know, Schumann went mad from that.

GEORGE: Artie Schumann? From Camp Hatchapee?

JERRY: No, you idiot.

GEORGE: What are you, Bud Abbott? What, are you calling my an idiot?

JERRY: You don't know Rober Schumann? The composer?

GEORGE: Oh, Schumann. Of course.

JERRY: He went crazy from one note. He couldn't get it out of his head. I think it was an A. He kept repeating it over and over again. He had to be institutionalized.

GEORGE: Really? ..Well, what if it doesn't stop? (Jerry gestures "That's the breaks." George gasps) Oh, that I really needed to hear! That helps a lot! Alright, just say something. Just start talking. Change the subject.. Let's just go, alright? I can't believe we're having dinner with Alton Benes.

JERRY: I know exactly what's goin to happen tonight. I'm gonna try and act like I'm not impressed, he's gonna see right through it.

GEORGE: Yeah, he'll be looking at us like he's backstage at a puppet show.

JERRY: Let me just get my jacket.

GEORGE: "Master of the house, keeper of the inn.."

I wasn't thinking of a specific number but in my case it was more than one case.

I backed up my truck into a light pole in the Mall one day. However, there's also '67 Lafite and '67 Haut Brion for $10 each in 1977. I liked the Lafite so much I bought a case of the '75 for $29.

Distributor close out on Edmunds St John CA Syrah 01 - five bucks a bottle.
I now have an Edmunds St John wing in the cellar.

Not quite the same thing, but the wine guy at Nugget Market sold me the remaining six bottles of 1998 Raymond Generations Cab for $35 a bottle (about half price) :!: Just drank the last bottle this holiday :(

Is the '75 Lafite drinkable yet or does it need 50 more years in the cellar?

In my case, since I rarely buy more than two bottles of anything, I'll arbitrarily make six bottles the volume needed.

Did pack an extra bag on my bicycle to accomodate the volume: Chéreau-Carré Muscadet the Severe-and-Mean 2004 à 6€. Biffar Deidesheimer Grainhübel Riesling Spätlese 1996 à 8€ (+ shipping). Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Spätlese No.23 1996 à 8€ (+ shipping).

Should have packed an extra bag on my bicycle to accomodate the volume but didn't: Musar Blanc 1975 à 50€ at the winery, because it's perhaps the best white I've ever tasted. 50€ for such an experience is worth it, but it was still too much for me to get in quantity.

My wife and I opened one bottle every 5 years on our anniversary, as we were married in '75. Infanticide for the first few bottles, but it was spectacular in 2000 and 2005. Still have a few left. 8)

Only 2 bottles, but when you score, you score:

Chave Hermitage 1987 for $15

If this were available by the case it would have been my house syrah: a pleasant, lightish wine with toned-down everything you expect from Chave, but eminently pleasurable.

The bad: 2 contenders, both with problems:

A mixed case of Byrd Vineyards (Maryland, just before they went out of business) cabernets. A couple were decent, then they went through the funky stage and just became doggone bad.

Another mixed case of a winery I put out of my mind, from California's Shenendoah area: zinfandels, mission grape, and a petite sirah I believe. Within the year, many of these had amazing amounts of volatile acidity.

2005 Reds (Laurel Glen), recently written up by Robin; $6.99 at Costco.

On the top shelf, I removed a lot of 1985 Grahams Porto from the province of Ontario in the 1990s, for around US$22. Not quite ready to drink, but soon.
