Domaine de la Chanade “Les Rials” Loin de l’Oeil Sur Lie 2005 (Vin de Pays des Cotes du Tarn)

“Loin de l’Oeil” is said to be a revived ancient grape. This VdP area overlaps with Gaillac, between Bordeaux and Rousillon in SW France.

Clear, medium straw. Rainwater and yellow fruit on the nose, picking up some tropical notes as it warms. Medium- to full-bodied and round, with nectarine, papaya, and mango flavors that verge on off-dry. A touch more acidity might enhance the balance, but still very interesting wine. $8. 12% alcohol.

Sauvion “Les Rafelieres” Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (Vin de Pays du Jardin de la France)

From the Loire. Clear, very pale straw, with the scent of washed yellow grapefruit and hand soap. Light- to medium-bodied and soft on the palate. Sour apple candy with some lemon zest. Floral rather than grassy for a SB, and not a lot of mineral character. Pleasant, though, and a clear cut above most whites available at its $6 price. 12% alcohol.
