Funniest wine-related thing I have read in a while

by David M. Bueker » Thu May 24, 2007 7:50 pm

I was perusing the latest copy of the Wine Spectator (I have not subscribed in years, but it keeps coming...) & came across this hilarious caption to a photo in the "Collecting" section:

"Tom Black's wine cellars, which comprise some 20,000 bottles, mirror his unostentatious approach to wine collecting."

Please, give me the proverbial break. I'll be over here laughing my ass off.

And no doubt the three Hummers parked out front of his house mirror his concern for the environment

10,000 bottles of Gallo Hearty Burgundy and 10,000 bottles of Almaden "Chablis"?

The $40,000 "unostentatious" wine callr: 20,000 bottles of two-buck chuck.

Let's hope it was a typo.

"Cellars." Plural. Probably multiple homes. All humble, of course.

Let's see, here's a line from the article:

"I probably have 100 vintages of Chateau Latour, but I don't feel compelled to boast about it."

Another:

"When Henri Jayer dies last year I opened his Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts 1985. That's probably a $2,000 wine that we drank casually around the kitchen counter in memory of the man."

And the article says about California Cults: Black says he still buys them, but is not a true fan.

About the most down to earth quote:

"I'm happy drinking Chateaus Haut-Bailly, Batailley and Grand-Puy Lacoste."

Wouldn't we all be so happy.

Typo - I don't think so.

I liked his "threshold" of $1K per bottle. I guess that makes $1001 ostentatious.

I'm buying more DRC Richebourg. It's downright humble.

Damn, I guess we know where we stand!
