Need some advice PLEASE. (I'm a wine rookie!)

by Tony P » Fri May 25, 2007 11:25 pm

I have just moved and decided to fill up my new wine celler. I am not a wine collecter, and have little knowledge about this hobby. Here's my predicament: Someone has offered to sell me a 1968 Chateau Lafite bottle of wine for approx. $265 US. I do not know this person well enough to trust him. I spoke to him today and asked him if the bottle was well stored. His reply was that it was kept in a dark closet at room temp. for a long time. What are the odds of this wine turning out OK for a future special occassion? Thank you for your time and understanding. Tony

Very low (the odds, not the price).

Pass, Tony. You can buy the same wine for about a hundred dollars more from a reputable merchant who will give you real assurances about storage conditions.

The chances of a wine doing well in those conditions over a long period of time are really very low. Moreover, the 1968 Lafite isn't really a wine to cellar much longer.

I'm sure we would all love to give you suggestions for other wines to add to your collection. Most of us would urge you to pass on this opportunity.

Regards, Bob

Welcome to the Forum, Tony!

There is so much good information here and (nearly) everyone is friendly and shares their knowledge freely.

Tony, you'll get more replies to your query if you post it over in the Wine Forum.

And if you could narrow it down a little that would be helpful. For example, what is your price range per bottle? Do you prefer whites, reds, sparklers, rosés, or a mix of everything? Do you like sweeter wines or drier wines? Are you particularly interested in one producing region? How long would you like to hold them for?

See what I mean? :)
