We're still live, at least for a few more minutes.

What a shame this wasn't next week Sat. Next Friday I will get to taste my first ESJs - looking very much forward them! Will this be listenable someplace?

p.s. all you ESJ fans: I might get the opportunity to buy the following:

Durell Syrah 1998
Les Côtes Sauvages 1996
Matagrano Sangiovese 1997
California Syrah 1996
Wylie Fenaughty Syrah 1998

From what I've read everything and anything from ESJ should be good! So, buy the whole lot?

What an odd/interesting selection of wines to import. I.E. they are far from current vintages.

Is this your Finnish alcohol monopoly? Why did they select them?

Not the monopoly. A private sale from a friend who can't fit anything into his cellar anymore who visits US often and has brought some ESJ back to Finland.

I'd get any of those that you can, Otto.
I havent had any of those vintages but we had the '95 Sauvage not too long ago and it was wonderful. '99 Durrell is still a baby. Looking forward to your reaction to these wines!

Shucks. Saturdays are terrible for me, I'm busy before I get out of bed. (Uh, don't take that wrong.) And today--well, I just forgot!

A question for Steve if he comes along this thread though: Steve, where do you think the 01 Peay is going from here? Drink up or hold?

No idea, Jenise. I only worked with those grapes one time, and it was the the first crop the vines produced, so not a good measure. I've never been particularly fond of the wine, so I'm probably not the best judge.

All can be found on Wine Therapy, although you probably have seen Manuel as LL here on WLDG, but with the recent birth of his twins he is probably posting less than in the past.

Indeed. Perhaps it's time to put one of my two bottles in the drinking queue.

Steve, thanks. I love your candor. I have to admit, the one bottle I opened, I found a bit strange based on your 2001 straight California syrah, plus everything I read about your wines.

David, here's my TN from the bottle I took to Bill Spohns brown bag lunch about three months ago:

2001 Edmunds St John Peay Vd. Syrah – My contribution. I opened the bottle at home to make sure it wasn't corked, and was shocked by the sweet heat that blew out of the bottle. "Oh my god, what's the alcohol here?" 14.9%. "Yow, I didn't think Steve made wines that hot. This isn't Paso, is it?" No, Sonoma Coast. I poured it into a decanter and went about other things, during which time I talked myself into not taking this wine at all. But suddenly it was 10:30, I was supposed to meet Bruce at 11:00, and with a border crossing between us I was already late. So I poured this back in the bottle and off I went--Steve and I would just have to take our lumps. I was glad after all, for in spite of the alcohol Steve's famous Northern Rhone sensibility was quite evident--it was neither sweet nor flashy, but well-balanced if a bit big. Whew!

I took your advice and bought it all! 18 bottles in all for the princely sum of 100€ - for once I feel that I got a bargain in Finland! We tasted the Durell '98 and Cotes Sauvages '96 and both were lovely and drinking great but still have life left. When should I drink the others of the list?

Sounds good. I would say you should not hesitate to drink the CA syrah and the sangiovese. You could probably also drink the WF although of the three it would probably have the longest aging potential.

Maybe others will know more specifics.

I'd leave the Wylie alone for awhile and drink the rest.

Thanks Rahsaan and Jim! I guess I'll drink most of them over this summer. At what age is WF usually mature?

'Usual' is a hard concept for me; but they last very, very well.
