This week's CompuServe/Netscape forum poll asks a simple question that every wine enthusiast can answer, as we invite you to tell us the wine-producing country that's your No. 1 choice when you're buying or drinking wine.

Nowhere else produces more of the acid driven reds that we like so much with food. Although, unfortunately, there seems to be a shift towards a more intenational style in so many favorites.

I, too, would have to go w/ Italy. I love the variety, especially in the reds, from powerful and thought-provoking to simple and endlessly quaffable. For me, the only problem is that I sometimes find it difficult to moderate myself with some of the easier drinking styles

My vote is 'wines made north of the 45th'.

I voted Italy, too. I like the acid, the tobacco and leather, the unique variety of wines. I love the chilly minerality of northeastern Italian whites.

France, for me, because of the variety available and, here in Europe, unbeatable QPR. The latter reason may surprise but, with only a little persistence, scores of excellent and distinctive, even classy, wines from small producers can be unearthed for less than EUR 10 and, if the bar is raised to EUR 15, it becomes many hundreds. Supermarkets should, however, be avoided as a source except for the famous Bordeaux crus.

I love Italian wines and drink them frequently but I think that in general one has to pay a few euros more for equivalent quality in the EUR 10-30 bracket. (Above that, Barolo producers claim that their wines costing EUR 50-100 are superb QPR compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy costing double!)

When the French start losing polls like this...it's time for them to WAKE UP.

I love Italian wines, but I buy French.
