WTN: 2006 Colio Estate Sauvignon Blanc (Ontario VQA)

by Paul B. » Thu Jul 12, 2007 11:35 pm

Colio Estate, which in previous years released wines under the Harrow Estate label, consistently makes high-quality everyday table wines. This Sauvignon Blanc from the dreary '06 vintage bears the 'Ontario VQA' designation rather than Lake Erie North Shore; this suggests that the wine is a blend from the two major Ontarian appellations (Lake Erie and Niagara). It would be good to check a spec sheet to see if this is indeed the case.

12.3% alc. Electric yellow-straw colour with much pétillance inside the glass. Aromas of Granny Smith apple, citrus, gooseberry and currant as well as cut grass and peas. Scintillating, minerally-crisp entry with exemplary dryness and texture on the mid-palate; there is no thinness here and one can hardly see the effects of the poor September weather we had. Much like a quality Grüner Veltliner but without the white pepper. Exemplary, clean crisp minerally finish - excellent quality for a mere $10.45.

So far, most of the 2006 Ontario whites have been excellent in my experience. I haven't tried many of the reds yet, and though the vintage wasn't ideal, this Sauvignon certainly counts among the successes of 2006.
