WTN: Weingut S.A. Prum Wehlener Sonneuhr Riesling Kabinett 2002

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Jul 17, 2007 8:23 pm

MSR
AP NR. 2576510903

Yellow-green color in the glass.

Lovely nose of petrol.

Fairly weighty and viscous in the mouth. Honeyed, sweet and grapey at first, followed by crisp, tart, mouthwatering green apples. A very rich, intense wine, with bracing and cleansing acidity.

A long, long finish, honeyed and grapey, along with mouthwatering green apples.

A very impressive wine.

Purchased at $23.55 (Canadian).

Bruce,
Sounds like a nice wine. SA Prum is one of my favorites, I really like the (I think New) Blue Slate designated Riesling. By your notes this sounds like a declassification of higher pradikat wine, you mentioned "Fairly weighty and viscous in the mouth. Honeyed, sweet and grapey at first". If you tasted this wine blind, would you have guessed Kabinett? Please see my post in
David Bueker's German wine thread.

You are correct Ed. I am not sure I would have guessed Kabinett, if I had tried it blind.

Based on last night's experience, I do think I will wait a while before opening the other bottles.

Depending on who you ask, the rampant "declassification" began with any year from 1999-2003. I happen to think it got seriuos in 2001 but blatantly obvious in 2003.

Kabinett is dead. Long live QbA.

Makes it a bit of a challenge when it comes to wine and food matching, when you aren't certain which Kabinett is going to show up.

Since this class of wines does not share the attributes of Kabinett, shouldn't they be classified as QBA? Perhaps a "super QBA" designation. They are certainly delicious and very good bargains (if you know what to expect) but as I've stated in the other thread, they are not Kabinetts!

Nope. You misunderstand the misguided German wine law. The more must weight (i.e. sugar in the grapes at harvest) the better it is. As long as a wine meets the minimum (and ridiculously low) requirement it can be called kabinett. There's no upper limit.
