#1 wine website in the world -- I've never even been there

Internet Users in Seven Countries Rate Wine.com #1 in Every Performance
Category

SAN FRANCISCO, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Wine.com, the nation's largest
online wine retailer, has been ranked the #1 wine website in the world in a
recent study conducted by the Bordeaux Business School in Bordeaux, France
(http://www.bordeaux-bs.edu). The e-Performance Barometer study, first
released at Vinexpo on June 20, is now available in English
(http://www.wine.com/bordeauxstudy) and ranks the best retail wine websites
as rated by Internet users in seven countries: France, Spain, Germany, the
UK, Italy, Australia and the US.
Over 2800 Internet users completed an online questionnaire analyzing 28
sites from the same seven countries. In addition, 100 users per site were
observed performing specific navigational tasks, such as purchasing wine.
The study analyzed and ranked each site on seven performance criteria:
information, product offering, site design, ease of use, security/privacy,
interactivity/personalization and reliability. Wine.com was ranked #1 in
every single category.
"Our entire team is excited about this ranking because, unlike some of
the rankings we've seen published in the past, this study is based on an
exhaustive, data-driven analysis of consumer preferences," said Rich
Bergsund, Wine.com CEO.

A quick examination of the actual PDF document reveals a simple truth: This study incorporated only WINE SELLING sites.

Still something to crow about, but the selective language used in this announcement is either careless or sleazy.

Here's a link to the actual document, which Wine.com (to their credit) makes available un-edited on their site. Note that it's a large PDF document.

Based on specific evaluation criteria and data ... I like that. Since I've not been a wine.com customer, I just went to that web site and gave it a spin. It is actually very well done. I was able to perform some quick non-text based searches with ease, for example South African Chenin Blanc. Try that on your favorite wine retailer web site.

However, the big thing I liked about this web site was the relative lack of visual clutter. Too many web sites come across like you are looking down the Las Vegas strip while stoned (no firsthand experience here). This one was clean and well designed, in my opinion.

So, I guess it is now time for me to use that wine.com gift certificate I received a few months ago.

Didn't say otherwise, you cranky old coot. ;) I was just pointing out that their news release over-states the award.

I still have never been there.

What's yer problem? My primary issue with them is that if you compare prices, they are almost invariably on the high side. Run a Wine-Searcher.com search on just about any wine and look for Wine.com; you'll find their listing down at the end where the highest price tags reside.

They also still won't ship to Kentucky, even though our anti-shipping laws were knocked out of the park by the Federal Court of Appeals a year ago. I would much rather see a company of their size and strength actively fighting the wholesale lobby and pushing the envelope on shipping rather than being wussy and taking no risks.

I have bought some wine from them with no problems. Sometimes their sale prices are not bad. I especially find them convenient to send wine gifts. The website is easy to use. Your mileage may vary.

Been there, done that -- that is why I have never been to their site. That and the fact I like to support smaller retailers with fair prices.

With any luck, they'll go bankrupt again. The sell-off of their stock the last time it happened was a real bonanza.

I get their promo emails regularly, but it's never anything I'm interested in. And their prices do seem somewhat higher to me.

My husband bought me one of their three-month membership deals where I got two new bottles each month, and while there were one or two that I ended up liking and adding to my "would buy again list", overall they were pretty average.

Likewise. I find this to be the case even after the discount I get through the company I work for.

I wonder why price was not a factor in the study.

Of course you've never been on the site. It's for consumers, not for people who drink for free...;)

Are you serious? My wine bill outpaces my second highest bill, health insurance, which, when you think about it, makes sense...

My health insurance is only around $700 a month, about half of my wine outlay.

I just did a quick analysis. Seems I spend about $800 more a year on wine than I do on health insurance. In either case, they each top my mortgage payments. Talk about priorities...
