WTN: Achaval Ferrer Gran Malbec Finca Altamira 1999

100% single vineyard, very old vine malbec from La Consulta, Tupungato, Mendoza. Very dark purple color. Delicate aroma of violets and ripe dark berries. In the mouth, an extraordinary explosion of blackberries, plums, cinnamon, dark cocoa. Oak has integrated very well to the very powerful fruit. The wine was aged for 20 months in 90% French and 10% American oak barrels. Soft tannins, this wine is nearing its peak but it will remain at a high performance plateau for a while. Long finish. Only 300 cases made of this first vintage of Altamira. Excellent wine, which has improved with cellaring and will probably get even better within a year or two.
