Hi Craig, I live a 15 minutes walk from the Michlala.
There's the Ramat Bet Hakerem outdoors shopping mall which is a 2 bus stations from the Michlala (about 20 min walk) where one can get the best falafel in town, Falafel Arba Te'amim (4 tastes falafel) which is IMHO the best in town for about 12 shekel ($ 3). There's there as well a branch of the Cafe Hillel chain, a bit like Coffe Bean but better (

) where they have some nice salads and pasta dishes. Other options to be taken in consideration are available at the Jerusalem Mall which is also not far away but food and practically everything else comes there at a premium price-wise. As well the New Deli is a chain that delivers and makes some very good sandwiches though not quite as good as PKD, as a minimum order of 70 shekel is required for delivery she'll likely have to co-order with her roommates... For the cheap and good places for food one would be best advised to hit the Machane Yehuda shuk where plenty of options are available yet I assume she wont have enough time to get there more than once or twice a week. All these places are of course kosher.
Best,
GG
