Call any vegetable, and the chances are good....

by Tom NJ » Sat Aug 01, 2015 7:01 pm

...your spouse needs your poop.

Long story short:

My wife got walloped, absolutely walloped, by a bout of diverticulitis last year. After a long course of treatment featuring many diverse and hard to pronounce medical elixirs...she got walloped again. More elixirs.

Things quieted down after that second bout for a few months, then on January 1st of this year she got hit again.

Diverticulitis is not fun.

Neither is, we're finding out, the C-Diff you get when you treat diverticulitis with what amounts to Agent Orange for your gut.

Interesting little factoid I never new: C-Diff is a spore, so unless you kill every single last one of the little buggers, a new batch will spring up like a mushroom field from even one lone survivor.

So far they haven't been able to kill every last spore in my wife's body. She's now just started another course of vancomycin following her third attack two days ago.

The good news, I should mention (since she does, to anyone who will listen), is that she's lost all the weight she's been trying to lose for the past decade. In basically one fell swoop, and mostly by being ejected from one orifice or another.

Why is this in the food folder? Is it so I can put you off yours?

No. It's because one of the options the doctor floated by her was a fecal transplant treatment. It appears to show real promise, even if it's not the industry standard yet.

And guess whose donors' poop has the best gut microbiome for this sort of thing, it seems?

Vegetarians.

So guess what I've been for the past 3 weeks?.

Yup.

God, I miss the taste of flesh.....

(Bonus points for anyone who actually got the Zappa reference in the title  )

Tom, my heart goes out to you both, but mostly to her. Hoping for a quick and speedy recovery for her, and your happy return to omnivorism ...

Thanks, Robin. At this point, if it would return me to using my canine teeth for their intended purpose I'd almost be willing to wish for her quick and speedy demise

I have read about poop transplants. It seems very reasonable, if not exactly cocktail hour chit-chat.

Good luck with it.

How much longer?

Ha. You haven't been to one of my cocktail hour's, apparently.

Not sure about the timing. She goes back to the GI doc next week, and he'll give us an assessment then. The timetable could vary widely. Thanks for asking :D

My best wishes to the two of you as well. C. diiff is a terrible thing to deal with.

At least the treatment doesn't require paleo poop....

Now, see, I was kinda hoping it would. I've got bags of the stuff lying around the house I've been trying to find a use for.

Holy moly, poor Wifey!!!

But since you almost went there, but not quite, I have to ask: how do they transplant it?

There is an extremely obscure Sheffield service piece for this....

Well, it needs to get into your colon, so there are two ways to get there. One via a tube that goes down your esophogus and the other going in from the, er, rear. Apparently, it gets blended up with sterile saline, strained, and in it goes. I would have to think that one would want it put in from the back going up given what's involved with the gastric tube stuff.

But Tom doesn't have Sheffield in his hope chest, just Le Creuset. He probably has the right piece--choice of Flame or Carribean Blue.
