The Rollie is hilarious. It's a bit of a wonder that someone actually put such a thing into production.

Very funny, but I will defend the bear claws: I have a friend who smokes an entire pork butt at a time and the bear claws are a good way to 'pull' it.

Understood, Jeff, but for most people who likely do much more modest amounts of meat it is like owning one of these to cut your 20' x 20' front lawn.....

PS - this clip is also pretty amusing for those liking hot sauces

Instructions on sabering Champagne are also fun (I have a Talwar for this, should I ever feel the need):

BTW, Alton is doing a reboot of Good Eats called 'Return of the Eats' supposedly coming on this year.

Alton himself characterized Good Eats as a combination of Julia Child and Monty Python and I expect that the new version will continue that tradition.

Sabers are cool but I prefer a small, precisely shaped explosives charge. Plus you get the benefit of a whiff of cordite adding to the complexity of the wine's aroma.

Great to hear that Alton is getting back to what he does best! Thanks for passing that on, Bill, as I hadn't heard about ut

The reboot is supposed to be in "2018" but nothing more specific than that.

I stopped watching the Cutthroat Kitchen - stupid game show that is beneath him. They guy is so talented with educational (and humorous) TV that they just wasted him in that lame attempt at mass entertainment.

We watched about three episodes but couldn't get into it for that reason. The judging by a single judge (and the same person in all the episodes I watched) didn't lend it much credibility, either.

Alton definitely lost his way for a while there. I wasn't sure he'd find his way back but things sound encouraging now.

I've seen mentions of the fact that he went through a divorce, which was part of or the reason for him hitting one of those walls in life where you question everything.

I use the back of a Chinese cleaver for sabering Champagne. I also own Port tongs. Very useful for opening vintage Port, where the cork is often crumbly.

I don't own tongs but figured I am covered if a cork ever crumbles and the Durand doesn't get it all - my back up is a port funnel with screen!

And I like your cleaver method - much less risk to bystanders!

I don't use the Port tongs all that often--too lazy and impatient to heat them up. So like you I have a Port funnel with a screen. And I do have a swan's feather to do the whole nine yards of the Port tongs schtick. A pair of swans lived by my parent's place on the Connecticut shore, and every day they would make the rounds of the cottage boat docks looking for food handouts. One of them plucked out and discarded a flight feather while we were feeding them and I retrieved it for use in the Port tongs ritual.

Good choice - a swan is excellent; only a poseur would dare use anything like a peacock feather!
