We never used to get fresh turmeric root here but now do and we have been making tea from it. Interesting taste that I rather like and all sorts of supposed health benefits (but I just drink it as I like the taste).

Thin slice two inches of fresh turmeric and ginger.
Add turmeric to 3-4 cups of water.
Bring to boil.
Simmer for 30 minutes to an hour.
Cover and set turmeric tea aside over night, optimally. ...
Strain out the root and reserve the liquid. ...
Reheat the mixture when you are ready for turmeric tea.

You can dilute the resulting liquid by about 25% or to taste.

I usually drink it cold but either hot or cold is nice.

The taste is spicy-herbal with a pleasant earthiness. You may want to work with the root wearing gloves if you don't want yellow fingers!

It's really good with coconut milk mixed in, too!

Yes, the tea is all the rage but I just use it for cooking. Great combination of bright, earthy, and spicy flavors. And a nice counterpoint to the fresh delicate ginger that we also get from the farmers market. The two make a great base for soups, or for sauteeing and finishing on top of lentils, or with vegetables.

But yes, the bleeding color is the main downside! (I foolishly went overboard with my fresh turmeric habit at an Air BnB this summer, and was furiously scrubbing to remove evidence. Hopefully it fades with time.)
