Your favorite yogurt?

by Larry Greenly » Fri May 11, 2007 10:57 pm

I'm on two weeks of antibiotic therapy, so I'm eating lots of yogurt to keep my GI tract happy.

I find many brands add so much sugar and junk that they turn a good food into junk food. My favorite is plain, non-fat Cascade Fresh yogurt, which is made in Washington. It has a very good flavor, nothing artificial and, best of all, has 8 different live cultures.

What's your fave?

Here in New England, I buy Stonyfield Farms yogurt. It's certified organic, natural culture, no added sugar or other junk, etc. Their whole milk yogurt can be skimmed if you need creme fraiche. The low-fat variety is an excellent all-purpose yogurt. I use this in all my Indian cooking. And it's great to mix fresh fruit and berries into.

I like homemade.

1 cup plain yogurt with active cultures
1 cup powdered skim milk
4 cups skim milk
Heat the skim milk to just below boiling. Add the powdered milk. Let it cool to 120 deg F. Add the yogurt. Put into a bowl that fits into a cooler that has water in it at about 110 - 120 deg F. Put the top on and leave it alone overnight. Refrigerate. It's usually a little bit more runny than commercial but I love the taste. I like to mix it with a little honey and/or fresh fruit/berries, etc.

Hmm ... I'm not a huge yogurt fancier, but for everyday I'm good with Dannon plain, and for special occasions I like Vermont Butter & Cheese Co.

I like homemade, too, but you have to start with some brand of yogurt, which determines the taste.
