What wine with Roast Suckling Pig?

by RichardAtkinson » Sun Jun 10, 2007 2:32 pm

Some friends are roasting one on July 4th. I usually pair pork with Rose or white...but thats, generally, with ham. I'm assuming an entire pig (small) will be richer since its got all the cuts of available...but that just a guess. I have no idea of the seasoning he will use, but probably some garlic... thyme or rosemary etc..

I was leaning towards a Southern Rhone. Any suggestions for wine and a side dish to pair with? ( We don't eat a lot of pork...)

well, I love Riesling with roast pork, but if it's a red you seek, I would go for one with bright acidity, to cut through the richness.
I'm thinking Cru Beaujolais, like Fleurie, or a good Valpolicella.

A Rhone would be great. So would tempranillo--roast suckling pig is a seasonal delicacy in Spain.

Corbieres, Minervois, Cahors, or anything from the Languedoc would be my choice.

The bottom line here is that we're all right--you just can't offend roast pig, and nearly any medium bodied red wine of your liking will compliment the food.
