Holiday Champagne suggestions?

by RichardAtkinson » Mon Dec 17, 2007 2:56 pm

We served the Nicolas Feuillatte Rose (read about here) last year and everyone loved it. Any more reccos in the $35.00-50.00 range?

Thanks,

Richard

My tasting group did a bubbly night Friday (report below "WTN: Serious Champ..." ). The Godme rosé held its own among much more expensive bottlings.

I also thought the 2002 Huet Vouvray Brut (obviously not Champagne, but very serious bubbly) was great, and the Duval-Leroy pretty tasty.

If you like rosé, Oudinot's has been very good for low-end of market, but haven't tasted recently.

Creightond's suggestion of Paul Bara is great - I love the house.

Can you get Gimonnet or Boulard?

It's an old standby, but the current release of the Bollinger Special Cuvee is outstanding!

A new discovery for me is Soutiran. Really like their Blanc de Blancs.

I had a Pol Roger Mesnil NV during Thanksgiving that I thought was even better than it usually is. I think around $40ish.

I may be the odd one here but I really like Moet's White Star NV. It's sort of classic in my opinion.

The NV Billecart-Salmon Brut Réserve is pleasing me greatly right now.

Henriot Brut Souverain seems to be widely available:

And it's a big, smooth, easy-quaffer.

By the way Robin, feel free to delete my post if you feel unfair. But I just checked several other fora, at least 2 (vinocellar and therapy) have first time posters touting this great video (with different story).

Nah. Popcorn is good with bubbly. But fried chicken (has to be really good fried chicken though) is better. Most deep-fat-fried foods are great with bubbly.

And cheetos are good too!

Yup, and your response pales in comparison to the reception it received in Therapy, Dale.

Pierre Peters is another good producer in your price range, as is Jacquesson's Cuvée 731.

How did I forget PP from my brief list? I love that house and just recently had a bottle of their BdeB Extra Brut.

Jacquessons Cuvée 7XX series is generally very good also - I agree. But I thought the 731 the weakest of them so far (but still good). It wasn't so precise and lazer sharp as the beautiful 730. If the 730 is still available, I would go for that instead. When will 732 come out?

Oops! You're correct, Otto. Looking back into my notes, it was the 730 that I last had. No idea when the 732 is due: I'm not privy to the inner machinations of Champagne houses.

Has anyone tried the Mumm de Cramant yet?

I keep hearing about it, and it's really got me curious.

Hearing about it indeed - Potential Parker 100-Point Champagne! Now there's hype bordering on outright dishonesty, as Parker threw no points out. But sheep that bite deserve it.

I've thought it a tasty Champagne before, on the fuller side but not very leesy/yeasty, but nothing that "rocked my world." As it is marketed as NV of course my impressions from 3 years ago may not match current batch.
