WTN: 1999 Edgewood Napa Valley Malbec

by Bill Buitenhuys » Sun Mar 26, 2006 6:49 pm

Timely to the malbec thread that popped up today, last night for dinner we had a 1999 Edgewood Estate Napa Valley Malbec 13.5% abv. $18

One of the first wines we bought on our honeymoon which inflicted us with the wine geek curse. This Jeff Gaffner wine is one of the few lower priced malbec that I really like. For one, it’s more refined and elegant than many of the fruity, hot, tannic monster malbecs that are so prevalent. It does have lots of fruit flavor mixed with scorched earth but the balance is quite nice, the backbone is noticeable, and the tannins, while certainly abundant, are under control, fine, and chalky. This went nicely with grilled burgers and oven fries.

Bill, have you had any of Gaffner's Saxon Brown labels?

He sure talks a wonderful game, and I've had a couple of his wines I liked.

Regards, Bob

Never heard of it, Bob. I'll be on the lookout.
