Confession is good: what have you bought lately?

by Jenise » Tue Aug 05, 2008 6:25 pm

And of course, I mean wine.

I've actually been very very good. But I slipped up today: after posting on the Kestrel, I indeed ordered two cases. And while I was on the phone, I threw in half a dozen 2005 Boudreauxs (a very fine WA state Bordeaux blend), 3 bottles of the new release of the Woodward Canyon Dedication Series (must be a hot one, I'm dealing with one of the biggest independent sellers in Seattle and he's only getting one case this year), and some of those Hestia semillons Clint Hall recently posted so well about. Oh, and six of that Portugese wine featured in today's Garagiste mailer.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

-1 bottle each of Ch. Beaucastel 2001 and 2004.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Jenise, what's the scoop on Garagiste? It seems like a lot of those wines kinda 'fell off a truck.'

I am on a severe budget. My pathological free-spending ways have caught up to me, like a heroin addict without any new veins. :? I even cut my cable connection (although that's also because I think cable and home internet are addictive and I should try cold turkey for a while on weekends-I stare enough at a screen during the work week).

Nonetheless-one bottle of Freemark Abbey 2003 Gravel Bench Chardonnay. One of my favorite Chards, although it is in the rich style I dislike in so many lesser wines. (Alpha Omega is the other one)

Principato Red for $7.00 per 1000 ml bottle! It's the house red from Olive Garden. A food and budget friendly sipper. I feel your pain Brian.

2006 Tangent Pinot Blanc. Grapes from Central Coast, mainly (I think) Edna Valley. $14.99. Delicious. Great example of what pure, unadorned (true) Pinot Blanc is like. Aromas and flavors are very pleasing, balance is nice. Finish is not long, but there's so much to enjoy in the flavor that I go back for more.
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Well, I went up to the Russian River Valley last Saturday and came home with 4 cases of wine. I basically just went up Olivet Road and then over to Joseph Swan.

I'm now a poor man.

Lots of PN, a couple of bottles of Swan Chardonnay '06, a couple of bottles of a pretty tasty Viognier from Sunce, and assorted zin and odds and ends.

Honestly not much. There's the 3 bottles of Dashe l'Enfant Terrible I ordered (and divulged) last week, but other than a bottle for some dear friends' anniversary nothing.

I have a case of Robert Mondavi Cab Napa Valley Reserve 2004 sitting in their office waiting for me to come down in October and pick it up. I did'nt want any shipment of that wine in warm weather so I will 'air condition' it myself. After it sits a spell I will crack one and report.
Thanks,
Mike

OK, so I tried to be good. But the Chambers St sale brought me out of wine-buying hiatus. I ordered a bottle or two of:
Hexamer 2006 Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Quartzit
Clos Roche Blanche 2007 Touraine Sauvignon Blanc #2
Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) 2006 Côte de Brouilly
Gysler 2007 Rheinhessen Weinheimer Riesling Kabinett
Cazin, Francois 2005 Cour-Cheverny Cuvée Renaissance
Bellivière 2005 Coteaux du Loir L'Effraie
Marechal, Catherine et Claude 2006 Bourgogne Les Gravels
Emrich-Schonleber 2007 Nahe "Lenz" Riesling
Sella 1999 Lessona Omaggio a Quintino Sella
Filliatreau 2005 Saumur Champigny Vieilles Vignes
Pinon, Francois 1989 Vouvray Moelleux 1er Trie
Guion 2006 Bourgueil Cuvee Domaine
Van Volxem 2007 Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling Saar Estate Pre-Arrival
Huet 1989 Vouvray Haut Lieu Sec
Manzoni - Valentino 1996 Barolo Vigna d'la Roul
Biondi, Ciro 2004 Etna Rosso Outis Nessuno

Plus, Chicago Wine Company sent out a list of everyday drinkers (a restaurant's winelist) that had some interesting stuff (and a lot of plonk). Ordered some old Ridge, young and old Germans, Meo, etc.

Plus, I found out that a friend's 40th birthday is tonight. And had nothing planned. So now if he gets off work in time he is planning on joining our little crew at river for concert/picnic. So I grabbed a bottle of the '68 Vina Valoria Rioja at PJs. Will open if he shows.

Will try and show more willpower.

I don't know if it's of any interest due to the unavailability of these wines, but why not share anyway...

My recent purchase has been of three Israelis -
Carmel, Regional Series Gewurztraminer 2007 - an off-dry simple gewurtz showing some varietal character and is overall pleasant and easy-drinking ~14$
Vitkin, White Journey 2007 - an unusual blend of gewurtz, french colombard and viognier - a delicious and interesting wine from one of the most interesting wineries we have around here. Good value for ~16$.
Galil Mountain Barbera 2006 - A new release and one of about 3 varietal barberas produced over here. ~18$.

Comments and questions are welcome.

Rolling on my floor laughing at this. Gosh. Where is my wine being stored? I even have some sitting at the bottom landing of my staircase. At least it's the coolest spot in my townhouse.

One more last night though. My neighbor owns a wine shop franchise (Wine Styles) and he let me taste through some Pinots last night (the two Burgundy Negociant village wines (2004 and 2005) were closed closed closed, and the best showing was the wonderfully fresh, if a little discombobulated Schug Sonoma Coast 2006), so I felt I had to pick up something. I picked up one bottle of the strange Eagle Eye Sauvignon Blanc-the one with the steely, minerally character shot through with a core/thread of tropical fruit from the 15% Roussanne. We are having a "Rhone" themed party this Satruday, so that's how I justified it.

No More, though. I do have winery wine clubs this fall, but except for that and maybe one bottle of 2005 Chateau Charmail and one replacement bottle for the 2006 Amateus Saumur we drank already...that's IT!!!!!!!

Everyday drinkers I bought this past weekend:
Louis Martini, Cabernet Sauvginon, Sonoma 2005 - Martini makes my favorite Cali Cabs - extremely reliable and taste more expensive than they are ($14)
Vinedos de el Seque, Alicante 2006 - had a previous vintage and was blown away by this 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre), saw the new vintage and snapped it up ($10)
Ch. de Campuget, Costieres de Nimes (blanc) 2006 - don't have much experience with white Rhone, but love Campuget's red, so thought I'd give the white a try ($10)

I bought a case of Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2005 for $30. I sell wine here and there was a change of distributor. The new distributor did not want the existing inventory so I got it at a great price. We opened one last week and then had it over the next 5 days. By the third day it was outstanding with the earth and forest floor coming out. Hopefully today I get to meet Matt Donaldson and Lynette Hudson from Pegasus Bay who were here for IPNC last week.

I bought two bottles of 2005 Ch. D'Issan at Costco while in there to get some new glasses, (they had a ton of it and some other '05s as well). I planned to buy a case or more when I went to pick up my glasses a week or so later. When I got there, I found out that some restaurant bought out the entire supply of all the '05 Bordeaux! I was none to pleased and learned that, at least some of the time, you gotta buy at the first opportunity.
