Following are my most recent tasting notes for the wines in question. With apologies, my search is not now coming up with the 1998 and 1999 wines. Nor have I yet tasted the 2005.
Hagafen, Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve, MJT Block, Napa, 2002: Oak-aged for 19 months and, blended with 12% of Cabernet Franc, this may be the most muscular wine ever from this winery and so firmly closed at this stage that one might think the wine nothing but power and intensity. Despair not, for all that is needed for this wine to show its charms is a good bit of cellaring. Destined to be an always concentrated and tannic wine but those with smooth and tempting wood, tannins and fruit all showing fine structure and balance. Opens to reveal generous blackberry, blackcurrant, citrus peel and tobacco aromas and flavors, those leading to a long fruity and earthy-mineral finish. Probably at its best with a whole roast ox but if that is not available a fine porterhouse steak will do nicely. Best only starting in 2011. Score 91. K (Tasted 18 Jul 2007)
HaGafen, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 2000: A medium to full bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% of Cabernet Franc, this deep purple towards garnet wine shows good balance between wood, tannins and fruits, with plenty of wild berry, currant and chocolate flavors all yielding comfortably to toasty oak on a long, spicy finish. Drink now – 2005 or longer. Score 90. Kosher. (Tasted 26 Nov 2002)
Hagafen, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 2001: Oak-aged for 19 months with 10% of Cabernet Franc blended in and now fully mature. Showing as full-bodied and concentrated as in its youth and still showing generous cassis and berry fruits but those now taking on first hints of toffee and herbal aromas and flavors. Drinking well but not for further cellaring. Drink now. Score 89. K (Re-tasted 19 Aug 2007)
HaGafen, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, 2002: Blended with 12% of Cabernet Franc, aged in American and French oak for 19 months, this dark garnet intense and concentrated wine shows generous wood balanced comfortably by soft tannins and fruits. On the nose and palate currant and black cherry fruits opening to reveal spicy, lead-pecil, cedar, tobacco and licorice. Drinking nicely now-2009. Score 90. K (Tasted 7 Feb 2006)
Hagafen, Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, 2003: When I first tasted this wine, just seven months ago, I suggested that it would need a bit of time for its elements to come together. That time has come. Dark garnet, full-bodied with firm tannins and generous near-sweet cedar-wood, the wine opens in the glass to reveal blackberries, currants and citrus peel. Give this one a bit more time and it will also show chocolate and tobacco notes. Best 2009-2012, perhaps longer. Score 89. K (Re-tasted 24 May 2008)
Hagafen, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 2004: Blended with 10% Cabernet Franc, deep and oak aged for 19 months, almost penetrable garnet in color, full-bodied and concentrated with firm tannins and peppery oak integrating nicely. On first attack black cherries and purple plums, those yielding to red currants and notes of bitter-sweet chocolate. On the generous finish a generous hint of licorice. Drink now-2011. Score 90.
